The word AMEN

The word Amen is remarkable. It is a transliteration from Hebrew (old testament) and Greek (new testament) and is also found in English and other western languages. It is a universal word. In Hebrew the word is “aman” meaning believe and faithful. In Greek, the word is “amen” which was used by Jesus to mean “truly”. It also means “let it be so” at the end of a payer. Despite looking like it has several meanings, it actually means the same thing in both languages.

In Hebrew the root word for “aman” is the verb “aman”. The verb meaning is to believe and to be faithful and the adverb, also ‘aman” is “let it be so”. These 2 words are spelled slighly different with a different tittle.

An example of this adverb is in Numbers 5:22. This verse says: “and this water that brings a curse shall go into your stomach, and make your abdomen swell and your thigh waste away. And the woman shall say, Amen. Amen.” In this case, the woman is agreeing with God in prayer., let it be so

Genesis 15:6 is an example of “aman” being used as a verb. “Then he believed in the LORD; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness.” In this case the word “aman” is translated “believed”.

In the Greek, an example is John 6:26: “Jesus answered them and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.” In this case. Jesus is saying “amen” where it says “Truly” in the English.

In English we generally us “amen” to pronounce the end of a proclamation or payer. You could also say “let it be true” or “believe it” instead. In the end it is a proclamation that God is true no matter how you use it, or what language you speak. Amen!

The Trinity

The doctrine of the trinity

God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit

An essential doctrine!

Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and the Muslims all preach AGAINST the doctrine, Jesus was NOT God!

Council of Nicaea in 325 AD

  • Called by Emperor Constantine of the Byzantine Empire
  • Called to examine the Arian controversy
  • Resulted in the Nicene Creed which established the doctrine of the trinity.

The ecumenical First Council of Nicaea of 325 declared Arianism to be a heresy. The great majority of Christians had no clear views about the nature of the Trinity and they did not understand what was at stake in the issues that surrounded it. Arius’s basic premise is that only God is independent for his existence. Since the Son is dependent he must therefore be called a creature. Arians put forward a question for their belief: “Has God birthed Jesus willingly or unwillingly?” This question was used to argue that Jesus is dependent for his existence since Jesus exists only because God wants him to be.

Atmosphere of the times

  • Christianity had just become the official religion of the Byzantine Empire
  • Isaiah 19:23 had come true for the first time in History!
  • Bishops called from all over the known world
  • Presided over by Hosius of Corduba (Spain) and Pope Alexander 1 of Alexandria
  • Located in Nicaea, now Izink Turkey (north west corner near Istanbul)
  • 318 attendees
  • Lasted from May to August
  • Created the Nicene Creed

BTW: Isaiah 19:23 – “In that day there will be a highway from Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrian will come into Egypt and the Egyptian into Assyria, and the Egyptians will serve with the Assyrians.

If you think about it, this is a pretty incredible prediction, which came true during the Roman Empire. This prediction basically says that people from Damascus Syria will be able to freely travel to Egypt and vice versa. This is impossible today, but was possible for several hundred years during the Bizantine Empire and was possible during the council of Nicaea.

Nicene Creed:

Nicene Christianity regards Jesus as divine and “begotten of the Father”. The Nicene Creed was adopted to resolve the Arian controversy, whose leader, Arius, a clergyman of Alexandria, “objected to Alexander’s (the bishop of the time) apparent carelessness in blurring the distinction of nature between the Father and the Son by his emphasis on eternal generation”. Following the formulation of the Nicene Creed, Arius’ teachings were henceforth marked as heresy. The Nicene Creed of 325 explicitly affirms the Father as the “one God” and as the “Almighty,” and Jesus Christ as “the Son of God”, as “begotten of[…] the essence of the Father,” and therefore as “consubstantial with the Father,” meaning, “of the same substance” as the Father; “very God of very God.” The Creed of 325 does mention the Holy Spirit but not as “God” or as “consubstantial with the Father.” The 381 revision of the creed at Constantinople (i.e., the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed), which is often simply referred to as the “Nicene Creed,” speaks of the Holy Spirit as worshipped and glorified with the Father and the Son.

The Creed (381):

We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; by whom all things were made; who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost and of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; he was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered, and was buried, and the third day he rose again, according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father; from thence he shall come again, with glory, to judge the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of life, who proceedeth from the Father, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spake by the prophets. In one holy catholic and apostolic Church; we acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins; we look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

All of us who attended mainstream churches at one time or another probably recited this creed as part of the service. I won’t make you do that but the creed is worth remembering. These notes will be available on my blog “theGodMeter.com” if you want to see the creed again, or you can look it up on Wikipedia like I did.

Basically, we are introduced to the doctrine in Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” The word “God” here in Hebrew is “el-o-heem” which is PLURAL, meaning God the Father, God the Son. And God the Holy Spirit.

The Torah asserted the ONEness of “el-o-heem” in Deut 6:4 – “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one!”. The word LORD is “Ye-Ho-Vaw” which means “I am that I am” being the name God gave Moses on Mt. Sinai and the word God being “el-o-heem” being PLURAL. I would paraphrase this saying “The great Jehovah our Gods, Jehovah is ONE”. In other words, a Singular God who is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, Not a pantheon of gods or idols like the Babylonians, the Greeks and the Romans had.

And God created us in his image: Genesis 1:26 – “Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness…” which is Body, Soul, and Spirit.

Jesus asserted his place in the “el-o-heem” by saying in John 10:30 “I and the Father are One”.

Continuing in John 10:31 Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him. 32Jesus answered them, “Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?”

33The Jews answered Him, saying, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God.”

34Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, “You are gods” ’? 35If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), 36do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? 37If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and [f]believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.” 39Therefore they sought again to seize Him, but He escaped out of their hand.

The reason that not accepting the trinity is a problem is because it diminishes the importance of Jesus and reduces his role in establishing Christian doctrine. Without the trinity, people can insert their own beliefs in along with the things Jesus taught. Jesus was not just a good teacher, not just a prophet, but God incarnate. To believe otherwise is not Christianity in my opinion. The trinity makes “saved by faith not by works” (Eph 2:8) critical. It also reinforces the fact that our sins our forgiven and since only God can forgive sin, Jesus being God, can forgive us our sins.

Every doctrine that excludes the trinity, inserts salvation by works and ignores faith. I mean, wouldn’t it be easy to travel to Mecca and walk around a black cube 7 times, and be saved? We all want some prescription that saves us, but really, who wants to trust an believe an invisible God that requires us to go through the process of sanctification? We cannot boast about about that!

In Eph 2:8 – For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

Also:

In 1 Cor 1:26 “or you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. 27But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; 28and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, 29that no flesh should glory

in His presence. (no man should boast before God – NASB) 30But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and redemption— 31that, as it is written, “He who glories, let him glory in the Lord.

Disclaimer:

I don’t know if Baptist denominations support the Nicene creed or not, although I would be very surprised if they didn’t in principal. Our Pastor is in Long Island so I didn’t get a chance to talk to him about this. I would just say, that if anything I said disagrees with our pastor, he is right, and I am not. The Baptist denominations do support the doctrine of the trinity however.

We are to Fellowship, not Socialize

Imagine you move to a new city and buy a nice house in a nice neighborhood. Soon after you move in, you meet your new neighbors, the Jones’s, (anybody named Jones here? If so, I’m not talking about you, just the generic “Jones”) The Jones’s throw a “welcome to the neighborhood party for you, but at the party, everyone was admiring Jonesy’s brand new SUV. You don’t feel good about that and soon after the party, you buy an even better brand new SUV. You invite the neighbors over, and they all admire your SUV and now you feel better! Everything is going well, until Jonesey decides to buy a new deck for his yard. He then throws a party for the neighborhood on his new deck, and suddenly, you don’t feel good any more. Of course, now, you also have to buy a new deck, not to be outdone by your “friend” Jonesey. A year later, you are bankrupt, and Jonesey moves to a more affluent neighborhood and you never see him again. This, of course is “Keeping up with the Joneses”.

This is called “socializing”. Why? Because underlying the social pleasantries, lies a whole lota “social contracting”. What is the “Social Contract”? There are many meanings, but I am referring to a book I read in high school by Robert Audrey called the “Social Contract”.

The book extended Ardrey’s refutation of the prevailing conviction within social sciences that all social behavior is purely learned and not governed by innate patterns. Through interwoven analyses of animals and human social structures Ardrey argued that inherited evolutionary traits are an important determining factor in social behavior.

In other words, we act like chickens. Chicken socializing is characterized by something called a “pecking order”. The pecking order goes like this: the top, or alpha chicken pecks all the beta chickens who then peck the lowly runt chickens who sometimes don’t survive the ordeal.

So why then are we acting like chickens who have brains the size of sunflower seeds? The reason is, we have flesh, and our flesh desires to be great! As Christians we need to deal with this and not let it run our lives. Jesus was tempted by Satan in this with what is called the “pride of life” where Jesus was taken to the pinnacle of the temple and told to “throw yourself down”. From Luke 4:9

9And he brought Him into Jerusalem and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here; 10for it is written:

‘HE WILL GIVE HIS ANGELS ORDERS CONCERNING YOU, TO PROTECT YOU,’ 11and,

‘ON THEIR HANDS THEY WILL LIFT YOU UP,

SO THAT YOU DO NOT STRIKE YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE.’” 12And Jesus answered and said to him, “It has been stated, ‘YOU SHALL NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST.’”

How cool would it have been if Jesus had jumped off, and floated down to the ground, surrounded by Angels! But, Jesus rejects the social contract. From Mark 10:42

42Calling them to Himself, Jesus *said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles domineer over them; and their [t]people in high position exercise authority over them. 43But it is not this way among you; rather, whoever wants to become [u]prominent among you shall be your servant; 44and whoever wants to be first among you shall be slave of all. 45For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His [v]life as a ransom for many.”

So what does the word “Social” mean? From Wikipedia

Social organisms, including human(s), live collectively in interacting populations. This interaction is considered social whether they are aware of it or not, and whether the exchange is voluntary or not.

The Wikipedia includes a quote from none other than Karl Marx to further explain the concept of “Social”

Human beings are intrinsically, necessarily and by definition social beings who, beyond being “gregarious creatures”, cannot survive and meet their needs other than through social co-operation and association. Their social characteristics are therefore to a large extent an objectively given fact, stamped on them from birth and affirmed by socialization processes; and, according to Marx, in producing and reproducing their material life, people must necessarily enter into relations of production which are “independent of their will”.

The news media in America likes to use the word “social” a lot. For example:

Social event

Socialism

Social Justice

Socialization

Social Climbing

We need to remember, that the world belongs to Satan and these terms may sound like good things, but like everything owned by Satan, ultimately they will be used against us. From Luke 4:5

5And he led Him up and showed Him all the kingdoms of [b]the world in a moment of time. 6And the devil said to Him, “I will give You all this domain and [c]its glory, for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I want. 7Therefore if You [d]worship before me, it shall all be Yours.” 8Jesus replied to him, “It is written: ‘YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD AND SERVE HIM ONLY.’”

We on the other hand are supposed to “fellowship” with one another. From Acts 2:42

42They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to [as]prayer.

So, what is fellowship anyway? As some of you know, I really enjoyed JRR Tolkien’s trilogy, “The Lord of the Rings”. The first book is called “The fellowship of the Ring”. A brief synopsis of this book is that a dangerous and powerful ring has been found and needs to be destroyed. So, the good leaders created a “fellowship” of hobbits, dwarves, elves and men to destroy the ring. They needed such a fellowship because powerful and evil forces are searching for the ring and they need a group of individuals with specific talents to perform the quest.

These men weren’t concerned with the social contract, determining who was the greatest. Instead, they used their talents and abilities to perform the quest. They weren’t socializing, they were fellowshiping.

Again, Jesus explains it best, from Mark 9:33

33They came to Capernaum; and when He was in the house, He began to question them: “What were you discussing on the way?” 34But they kept silent, for on the way they had discussed with one another which of them was the greatest. 35And sitting down, He called the twelve and *said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.” 36And He took a child and placed him among them, and taking him in His arms, He said to them, 37“Whoever [s]receives [t]one child like this in My name [u]receives Me; and whoever [v]receives Me does not [w]receive Me, but Him who sent Me.”

Our “Quest” is to preach the gospel, praise God, encourage each other, and make disciples. It is NOT to determine who is the greatest, which is the point of socializing sometimes.

So, what gets in the way of fellowship? I have a list!

Number one: Not going to church. Violating this simple habit causes the most backslides in Christianity. I have been involved with the church for 44 years, and I see this frequently, people start coming, come for a while and then gradually stop coming. What happens to these people is a subject I don’t want to get into, but it is the worst thing we can do to ourselves as Christians. From Hebrews 10:23

23Let’s hold firmly to the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; 24and let’s consider how to [i]encourage one another in love and good deeds, 25not abandoning our own meeting together, as is the habit of some people, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.

You cannot fellowship with believers if you don’t regularly go to church. You will not get the teaching you need to be a disciple, you will not get the encouragement your need to stay in the faith, and lets face facts, you won’t be actually spreading the gospel either. While some are unable to go to church for various reasons, 99.99% of you have no excuse, and the people that cannot, really want to and wish they could.

Second: Not engaging into the quest AKA not using your talents and abilities to glorify God. There is a rule that seems to be true across the board that 20% of the people do 80% of the work. This is the sad reality of any kind of organization, and the church is no exception! But, we ALL have talents and abilities we can use to serve God. We all have a ministry in the “body of Christ”, according to 1 Corinthians 12:4

4Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. 6There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. 7But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

Lets face facts, we NEED your ministry in our church! There is joy in ministry because we are honoring the God that so loved us he gave his Son to be the sacrifice for our sins.

Third: Socializing with unbelievers. I won’t deny that socializing can be fun, but believe me, this is a dangerous thing to do. Remember, we are to be in the world, but not of the world. (John 17). We must understand that the influence of worldly and Godless people will likely win you over if you hang around them too much. Jordan Peterson, the famous psychologist, also warns his readers in his book “12 rules for life” of the dangers of associating with the wrong kind of people.

Read page 82 from 12 rules for life.

Some socializing with friends and family may be necessary, but we need to go into these situations with our eyes open and respectful of their ability to influence us. We can tell ourselves that we are there to evangelize, but if we are honest, we must admit that we mostly don’t actually do it. The fear of man creeps in and shuts our mouths 99% of the time. Don’t underestimate the power of peer pressure. The other side of this, is to isolate ourselves like the Amish do, but this completely removes any influence we might have. Remember, we are IN the world but not OF the world as it says in John17.

Fourth: Seeing Christians as inferior to impressive worldly people. Lets face facts, most of us aren’t all that impressive. Especially yours truly! If you are foolishly looking to social climb, the church is usually the worst place to do it. We need to remember that social climbing is for chickens and not human beings. AND, nobody ever really changed their social position by social climbing. From 1 Corinthians 1:26

26For consider your calling, brothers and sisters, that there were not many wise according to [ab]the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; 27but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, 28and the [ac]insignificant things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are, 29so that no human may boast before God.

Fifth: Not studying the Bible. Reading and studying the Bible matures us. I have been studying it for 44 years and have yet to be bored. When you have a good understanding of the Bible, tricky arguments from Satan don’t work on you and you won’t fall prey the arguments of people of higher intelligence than you. Also, you will be able to quickly refute their arguments when they are presented in public. You would be surprised how stupid their arguments really are. From 2 Timothy 2:15

15Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a worker who [g]does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.

Sixth: Not engaging in hospitality. Hospitality means spending time with Christians outside of church functions. From 1 Peter 4:8

8Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins. 9Be hospitable to one another without complaint.

Hospitality is much more enjoyable when we can enjoy someone’s good fortune and not be jealous of the homes and fun stuff people have. Conversely, we should not be ashamed of our own lack of impressive homes and stuff. Remember, there is always somebody with more stuff than you. We should not be concerned with such worldly things. Also, some of us cannot be as hospitable as others due to circumstances like unbelieving spouses, tiny apartments, and (ahem) living with relatives.(like poor Daniel) It is also beneficial if we substitute our desire for socializing with fellowshiping with believers instead of risking the influence of worldly people. Remember, we all have DIFFERENT gifts and abilities, and we should not feel inferior to those with more visible ministries. From 1 Corinthians 12:14

14For the body is not one part, but many. 15If the foot says, “Because I am not a hand, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason [n]any less a part of the body. 16And if the ear says, “Because I am not an eye, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason [o]any less a part of the body. 17If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? 18But now God has arranged the parts, each one of them in the body, just as He desired. 19If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20But now there are many parts, but one body. 21And the eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you”; or again, the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22On the contrary, [p]it is much truer that the parts of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary; 23and those parts of the body which we [q]consider less honorable, [r]on these we bestow greater honor, and our less presentable parts become much more presentable, 24whereas our more presentable parts have no need of it. But God has so composed the body, giving more abundant honor to that part which lacked, 25so that there may be no [s]division in the body, but that the parts may have the same care for one another. 26And if one part of the body suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if a part is [t]honored, all the parts rejoice with it.

Seventh: Not getting involved in leadership. I have been in leadership perhaps 30 of the 44 years I’ve been a Christian. We are ALWAYS looking for leaders, and we get turned down by people frequently I think because people don’t want to donate the time and don’t want to get into messy interpersonal issues. Also, some of the jobs, like mine, can get complex and frustrating. We NEED to remember that we do these leadership jobs for God, not the approval of the congregation. From being a church leader for many years, I can tell you that we are not always appreciated. People backbite you, criticize you ignorantly and take advantage of you. I wish things were different, but it is why Jesus told the disciples that you need to be the servant of all. From Mark 10:43

43But it is not this way among you; rather, whoever wants to become [u]prominent among you shall be your servant;

Having good leadership is necessary to set the correct example to the rest of the congregation. Good fellowship requires leaders and people to model Christlike behavior.

We leaders need to model God’s self sacrificing love for everyone. And, our motivation needs to be to serve God and the congregation. Believe me, God is worthy of serving! And because he cares about the congregation, we leaders should care too. We should never “lord” it over the congregation in the manor of feeling superior, like some kind of stupid aristocrat. I must admit, I personally really don’t have much temptation to feel superior, since it is quite obvious I am NOT.

So what am I saying then? We should fellowship instead of socialize, not hang out with worldly people any more than necessary, practice hospitality, read our bibles, accept leadership positions when called to do so, don’t social climb (doesn’t really work anyway), practice ministry, and most importantly GO TO CHURCH EVER SUNDAY, You really cannot fellowship with a video of some famous preacher just in case your are tempted to do so instead of going to church.

Godless and Hypocrisy are the same word in Hebrew

Isaiah 10:6 says in the King James version – “I will send him against a hypocritical nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.”

But…the new American Standard version translates this verse as – “I send it against a godless nation and commission it against the people of My fury to capture spoils and to seize plunder, and to trample them down like mud in the streets.”

Why the difference? As it turns out, the word “chaneph“(2611) can be translated as profane, irreligious or GODLESS.

We don’t normally think of godless or hypocrisy as the same word in English, because they have different definitions. But in Hebrew, they have same definition. I think this is because godless people (aka atheists) become hypocritical as a result. They are double minded, having a selfish standard for themselves, but a different standard for everyone else. This concept is reflected in Islam as well, relegating non-Muslims as “Kafer”, meaning that they are to be treated differently in a majority Muslim nation.

This is why we see that modern leftists in our nation regularly issue much harsher punishments to non- leftists. An example of this is what happened to the Jan 6th protesters, after they got caught breaking into the Capitol building. Leftist protesters, on the other hand, were bailed out by the vice President. By injecting a political test into their justice, they expose their hypocrisy.

This is the unfortunate result of the West losing its religion, Christianity. This mirrors the warning given to Israel by the prophet Isaiah (chapter 10:1) as Israel lost its religion also:

Woe to those who enact unjust statutes

And to those who constantly record harmful decisions,

So as to deprive the needy of justice

And rob the poor among My people of their rights,

So that widows may be their spoil

And that they may plunder the orphans.

Now what will you do in the day of punishment,

And in the devastation which will come from afar?

To whom will you flee for help?

And where will you leave your wealth?

Nothing remains but to crouch among the captives

Or fall among those killed.

In spite of all this, His anger does not turn away

And His hand is still stretched out.

Wisdom From Science Fiction

While reading “God Emperor of Dune” by one of my favorite authors Frank Herbert, I found this gem:

“Liberal bigots are ones who trouble me most. I distrust the extremes. Scratch a conservative and you find someone who prefers the past over any future. Scratch a liberal and you find a closet aristocrat. It’s true! Liberal governments always develop into aristocracies. The bureaucracies betray the true intent of people who form such governments. Right from the first the little people who formed the governments which promised to equalize the social burdens found themselves suddenly in the hands of bureaucratic aristocracies. Of course all bureaucracies follow this pattern, but what hypocrisy to find this under a communized banner.” (page 160)

Frank Herbert had this published in 1981. I suspect it was written much earlier, since the original book this story is a sequel of, was published in 1965. So my thought that liberals are closet aristocrats is nothing new. Since most of our learning and entertainment comes from liberals, I am not surprised that I never heard this before I came up with the idea in this blog. See “All Men are Created Equal”.

Wisdom from Wikipedia

A commercial I saw on YouTube used the term “romcom”. I confess I didn’t know what that meant, so I looked it up on YouTube. While viewing the posting, I found this gem:

On society today

With the increase of romantic comedy movies, there has been an apparent change in the way society views romance. Researchers are asking whether the romances projected in romantic comedies are preventing true love in real life. The increase in use of technology has also led the society to spend a great amount of time engaging in mediated reality and less time with each other. Even though researchers have only started to explore the impact of romantic comedy films on human romance, the few studies conducted have already shown correlation between romantic comedies and the love delusion. Romantic comedies are very popular. They depict relationships that some scholars think affect how people view relationships outside of this virtual world.

The illusion of love

In the past, love has not always been the real reason for people coming together. In some cultures, arranged marriages were common to adhere to and propagate caste systems or to join kingdoms. Today, love is the root of all romance, and it is over-emphasized through these films. It tells viewers that love conquers all and will ultimately bring a never-ending happiness that is rarely affected by any conflict. When people do not experience the romance portrayed in these movies, they often wonder what they are doing wrong. Although people should be able to tell between an overly romanticized love and realistic love, they are often caught up in constantly trying to echo the stories they see on screen. While most know that the idea of a perfect relationship is unrealistic, some perceptions of love are heavily influenced by media portrayals.

Conducted research

A study was conducted at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh to understand this phenomenon. They studied 40 top box-office films released between 1995 and 2005 to establish common themes. Then they asked hundreds of people to complete a questionnaire to describe their beliefs and expectations in romantic relationships. Researchers found that people who enjoyed movies such as You’ve Got MailThe Wedding Planner, and While You Were Sleeping often failed to communicate with their partners effectively. They also believe that if someone is meant to be with you, then they should know your needs without you telling them. Although this study is just one of a handful, it shows a correlation of how people’s expectations are distorted through watching romantic comedies.

My Observations

I would say that these romantic movies are a contributing factor in the high divorce rate. People have developed some very unrealistic expectations for marriage. I would also blame gay marriage on this phenomenon, because gays feel that their love for one another deserves to be celebrated through marriage. We think marriage is about falling in love and the strong feelings we have for one another. The reality is, marriage is a contract. It is designed by God to insure that the human race is perpetuated, and that children are brought up properly by committed parents, instead of the State or by The Street.

I would also add pop music to this, to a degree. Music exposes the strong emotions brought about by falling in love and glorifies it. This is the purpose of music, to illustrate strong emotions and relive them. The balance of this is that if it is understood that falling in love is a temporary phenomenon (which anyone married for more than 5 years understands), there is little harm from this glorification. The problem is that unless you know this fact about marriage, there is a danger that you will get divorced because “the love is gone” and will seek another partner to get back that “loving feeling”. Children NEED committed cisgender parents.

You will always have the poor

Some Christian denominations like to focus on helping the poor. Paul did say that we should “Remember the poor” (Gal 2:10), but, there should be no doubt that his primary focus has always been on the Gospel. I believe these denominations are ashamed of the gospel and want to be a “friend of the world” (James 4:4) so they deliberately shift their focus from the gospel to helping the poor. Doing this not only undermines the gospel, but also is not what Paul meant when he said to “remember the poor”.

These people need to remember the story about the prostitute pouring perfume on Jesus’ feet: (John 12:3) Mary then took a pound of very costly perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples, who was intending to betray Him, said, “Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and given to poor people?” Now he said this, not because he was concerned about the poor, but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box, he used to pilfer what was put into it. Therefore Jesus said, “Let her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of My burial. “For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.”

“For you will always have the poor with you”. This is the operative message here for us about the poor. Fact is, most poor people DESERVE to be poor (at least in the US). Why? Because they don’t learn from their mistakes. For example, if a poor person were to suddenly get a windfall of money, what do they do with it? Unfortunately, most would use the money for a luxury item, drugs, throwing a party or trying to double the value by gambling. In the end, they end up with nothing. We all do stupid things with money, but the important thing to do is to LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKE. Many people just don’t do this, because their pride won’t let them. Therefore, they make the same mistakes over and over. People who learn from their mistakes don’t stay poor for long. This is why Jesus said “you will always have the poor”.

What Jesus was saying in context was that churches should focus on the GOSPEL, not the poor. Help the poor, yes, but PREACH THE GOSPEL. In this quote from Jesus, we see that he reminds them, “you will not always have me”, implying that he was going to the cross soon, and the focus should be on HIM and on HIM crucified. These churches err by focusing on the poor. After all, isn’t that what leftists focus on? They are saying to the leftist: “Hey, we care about the poor too!”, trying to have fellowship with them. This is ultimately a futile attempt to get leftists to attend church. We know it’s futile because these types of churches are losing members rapidly, while churches that focus on the gospel, are still going strong.

This attempt to be friends with the world by focusing on the poor is futile also because the world is an ENEMY of Jesus. From James 4:4 “You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. They think they can attract people to their church by “virtue signaling” like the world does. They do not understand that this “virtue signaling” is just self righteousness. How easy is it to be like Judas and take money that is not his and give it to the poor. Judas was just virtue signaling that he thought that Mary’s actions were a waste and HE would have given the money from the sale of the perfume to the poor. This is the “righteousness” of the world, talking someone else’s money and giving SOME of it to the poor.

Oh yea….on a side note, the ideologies of the left ALL depend on this principal: taking what is not theirs, and keeping some of it, and giving what is left over to the poor. This is why they focus on the poor, so they can take, or steal by force, money that is not theirs and use the plight of the poor as the excuse, AKA virtue signaling.

From the Statue to the Anti Christ

Daniel the prophet interpreted a dream that Nebuchadnezzar had of a statue where the Head of Gold in his dream was represented by his Babylonian empire. His empire was destroyed by the empire of the Medes and the Persians, notably run by Cyrus the Great. This empire was represented by the Arms of Silver. The Persian empire was destroyed by Alexander the Great, who was Greek. The Greek empire was represented by the chest of Bronze. This empire was destroyed by the Roman empire. This empire, represented by the Belly and Legs of Iron, was split into the eastern empire and the western empire. The eastern empire was destroyed by the Islamic Caliphs. The Empires of the Caliphs were destroyed by the Turkish Ottomans. Meanwhile the Western Roman Empire was destroyed by Christianity as represented by the Rock that grew into a Mountain from Daniel’s prophecy. Out of Christendom, grew the British Empire which destroyed the Ottomans during WW1.

When the middle eastern peoples tried to resurrect the Caliphs, they were destroyed by a remnant of the British Empire, the United States of America.

The “West” created out of the Church that destroyed the Western Roman Empire will be destroyed by the Anti Christ. The Anti Christ will be destroyed by the GOD of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. YOU don’t want to be around for THAT, trust me.

Job Lite

Lately I have been calling myself “Job lite” because of some trials I have been going through. While my trials are nowhere near what Job went through (he lost everything except his wife and his life) and nothing in comparison to what Christians in the middle east and in China are going through…for me, its been pretty severe. I lost my ministry first, then I lost my health, then my job and finally my identity. While none of these were particularly severe, going though all this in the last 5 years, seeming at the same time, has been difficult. I ended up quite angry at God over the whole ordeal. The fact is, however, I have no right to be angry. I should be considering it “pure joy” as the book of James proclaims in Chapter 1 verse 2. For me, I think the temptation to dump the whole thing, that is Christianity, jumped into my life. Thank God, I couldn’t imagine doing such a thing, and the verse from John chapter 6, verse 68 came alive to me. After Jesus’ “difficult statement” that caused many disciples to leave, Peter said: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life.”

I did not want to go back to the world and the futility of their thinking. This fact has become painfully obvious to me as I grew old. I may not like what God is doing to me, but I really don’t want to leave either. All across America, people are leaving the church and leaving God in record numbers. Just like in Europe, “cultural Christians” are losing their faith because the culture in changing. As this culture changes, tolerance of us will change too and we will experience real persecution.

One big difference between myself and Job, is that Job didn’t do anything to deserve his trial. I on the other hand absolutely do. Through the whole experience, I have been made painfully aware of sins that I had not realized I had. I will confess one to you all. I am a workaholic. This was quite an eye opener to me, because since I was a little boy, I have always thought I was a lazy person. When I was in second grade, my teacher thought I was “developmentally disabled” and didn’t belong in the same class with the other kids. She demanded that I be examined by a psychologist. The psychologist gave me an intelligence test, and discovered, much to their surprise, that I have an above average intelligence. So why then was I doing so poorly in school? They couldn’t figure it out, so they told me that I was “just lazy” and needed to buckle down and get some work done. I believed this lie for my entire life, until just recently. I am not lazy, I just need to do things a little differently than everyone else. Once I figured this out, at the age of 19, I started becoming a workaholic. One of my teachers in the technical school I went to told me “a lazy technician is a good technician” and I need to apply my smarts to a problem instead of grinding away at something with hard work. Needless to say, I applied this principal, and became pretty successful. This, along with my ambition, turned me into a workaholic. In 1993, I was laid off from IBM, and got a job in NYC. As a result, I spent over 12 hours away a day, every day, from my family. Even when I transferred to Westchester, I still spent over 12 hours a day away from my family even though my commute was cut in half. My kids tell me I would come home every day, exhausted, and would turn off my brain, and just watched the idiot box until I went to bed. When I was forced to retire 2 years ago, I felt I had lost my identity. Even now, I still don’t feel right unless I am working. I came home, and found that my family was in shambles.

What I am supposed to do now, I am not sure. I would ask the reader to pray for me for wisdom from God. I really need it. They call retirement the “golden years”, and that we should relax and bask in the light of our accomplishments. I think this is a lie from the pit of hell, at least for me. Not only is there no “gold”, but I realized that some of my “accomplishments” were made at the expense of my family.

New Letter to the Poughkeepsie Journal

Two years ago, I was forced to retire from my job. Now, at age 62, I am partially retired. I still need to work as a ride-share driver to make up the difference caused by early retirement. Years ago, many US corporations started flirting with the idea of offshoring, including my own company. At first, it was easy to compete with offshore workers. Then, as time wore on, it became more difficult. The company felt that it had to offshore a major part of its operations to modernize its infrastructure. As this was going on, I felt that I had been stabbed in the back by the Republican party, which supports offshoring. Even though I was a Republican I looked to the Democratic party for support. I mean, they are the party of the little guy, the working man right? What I found was that they were even worse than the Republicans! Open borders, sanctuary cities, increased H1B immigration, unbalanced trade agreements, and job killing regulations are part of their platform. On top of that, they have become increasingly authoritarian, socially extreme and bigoted against white men. How could I ever vote for that? Add to that, one of the reasons I have to work is because of out of control medical costs. My medical insurance, thanks to Obamacare, costs over $18,000 a year! Even though I am not rich, I still got soaked! How could anyone in their right minds vote for that? Please vote Republican in November!
